Warrior Leveling Build - Protection Spec
- Protection – If you’re really keen to tank from the start, there are several options to consider. The first option would be Fury tanking (see above) as it won’t slow you down when questing and can often generate more threat on mobs than a Protection specialized Warrior could. However, if you do want to go Prot from the start you can still level fairly quickly.
The trick to this is spending most of your time in instances instead of questing, and knowing when you’re wasting your time with a group (e.g. you’ve been going for half an hour and haven’t made it past the second pull because X person keeps breaking Y crowd control and Y goes after the healer).
- Where to spend your talent points as Prot – 5/5 Anticipation -> 5/5 Toughness -> 1/1 Last Stand -> 3/3 Defiance -> 5/5 Shield Specialization -> 1/3 Improved Sunder Armour -> 1/1 Concussion Blow -> 3/3 Improved Sunder Armour -> 2/2 either Improved Shield Bash or Improved Taunt (whichever you find yourself using more often) -> 3/3 Shield Mastery -> 2/5 One-Handed Weapon Specialization -> 1/1 Shield Slam -> 3/3 Focused Rage -> 3/5 One-Handed Weapon Specialization -> 5/5 Vitality -> 1/1 Devastate -> 5/5 One-Handed Weapon Specialization -> 2/2 Improved Bloodrage -> (Moving on to the Arms tree) 5/5 Deflection -> (Moving on to the Fury tree) 5/5 Cruelty -> (Moving on to the Arms tree) 3/3 Improved Thunder Clap -> 2/3 Improved Heroic Strike -> 1/1 Improved Shield Block -> This is a decent build to stick to at 70, the only change I would suggest is dropping the points in Improved Shield Bash, and going 3/3 Improved Heroic Strike and 1/1 Anger Management. See Here..
- How to play as Prot- Tanking instances at the very low levels usually comes down to who’s doing most damage, so it’s often worth just throwing on a 2H weapon or dual wielding until you get to the bosses. Once you have more attacks available to you, there are several things to remember. Number one is always be in Defensive Stance when tanking.
Number two is always have your shield on when tanking. To begin a fight you should use Bloodrage, then immediately pull with your ranged weapon (e.g. Shoot/Throw). When the mob gets to you Shield Slam it to gain initial aggro (this is your highest threat generating move and should be used whenever it’s not on cooldown). Your attack rotation should be Shield Slam and Revenge whenever they’re up, spam Devastate (or Sunder Armour if you don’t have the move Devastate yet) when your two main moves aren’t available, and spam Heroic Strikes on top of all that when rage permits (Heroic Strike has a separate Global Cooldown from the others). That covers your threat generation, now on to survivability.
If the mob isn’t hitting you hard you’re fine just concentrating on the above, but if you’re taking a beating (or it’s a boss – you should always keep the following up if you’re fighting a boss) you need to keep Shield Block active 100% of the time, so you need to refresh it every 6 seconds when it comes off cooldown. You also need to keep Thunder Clap and Demoralizing Shout up on the mob you’re tanking at all times. Thunder Clap does a tiny amount of damage as well, so watch out if you’re near Crowd Controlled mobs :)
